Staying Safe in Cold Weather

We will be having abnormally and dangerously cold weather locally. The wind chill will be so low as to cause frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. So here are some tips for staying safe in these dangerous temperatures:

Indoors:

  • Make sure that babies and young children are sleeping in warm rooms and are wearing warm clothing (i.e. footed pajamas).
  • Make sure there are no pillows or soft bedding in cribs as they pose a risk for smothering or SIDS.
  • Check on the elderly frequently to make sure they have heat in their homes.
  • Leave taps slightly open to prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Eat sufficiently and regularly and stay hydrated.
  • Don't use generators, grills, and camp stoves indoors as the fumes are deadly.
  • Don't drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, as these cause heat loss.
  • Dress in layers of warm clothing and use extra blankets, sleeping bags, or coats.

Outdoors:

  • Wear layers of warm clothing, coats, hats, scarves, and gloves.
  • Avoid walking on ice.
  • Avoid getting wet.
  • Avoid traveling on ice-covered roads.
  • If you are stranded outdoors, stay in your vehicle.
  • Try to keep pets indoors during cold weather. If they go outside, dry them thoroughly when they come back indoors.
