How South Carolina has voted for president in the past five elections

As the presidential race heats up toward Election Day, we're taking a look at how South Carolina has voted in the past.

Historically, South Carolina votes for the Republican candidate in a presidential election, adding nine electoral votes to the total of whoever claims the Palmetto State. You have to go back to 1976 for the last time South Carolina voted for a Democratic presidential candidate. That candidate was Jimmy Carter, who would become the 39th President of the United States.

President Donald Trump is looking to continue the success Republicans have experienced in the state. Former vice president Joe Biden's primary victory in South Carolina back in February was key to his success en-route to becoming the Democratic Party's nominee.
