Upstate soldier killed in line of duty to be honored during Coca-Cola 600

The memory of a fallen soldier from the Upstate will be honored by the NASCAR industry as part of a special Memorial Day Weekend tribute, NASCAR announced Monday.

Pfc. Barrett L. Austin of the U.S. Army died on April 21, 2013, in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device.

The attack happened four days earlier in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

Austin was born in Easley on November 10, 1992, to Curt and Yolanda Austin.

He was a 2011 graduate of Pickens High School and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.

During Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as part of 600 Miles of Remembrance, the names of Austin and U.S. Armed Forces members who sacrificed their lives for our country will be displayed on the windshields of each of the 40 NASCAR Cup Series cars participating in the race.

The name of Pfc. Barrett L. Austin will be displayed on NASCAR Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet.
