BMW confirms 14 cases of coronavirus at Spartanburg plant

BMW Manufacturing, one of the largest employers in South Carolina, confirmed Thursday that it has 14 active cases of COVID-19 at its Spartanburg plant.

Out of 11,000 employees, that is a percent of 0.1%.

The company said in an internal message to employees that each case is unrelated to the other and all affected associates have been placed in quarantine.

The statement said all affected areas of the plant have undergone a deep and thorough disinfecting process.

"The health and safety of all persons working at BMW Manufacturing has always been our top priority," the statement said.

The plant resumed production for the A Shift on May 4, and the B Shift on May 31.

"Since restarting production on May 4, numerous safety procedures have been implemented according to the recommendations of state and local governments and health authorities," the statement said. "The company also adheres to strict case management and quarantine guidelines to protect the entire workforce and help mitigate the spread of COVID-19."

Those measures include temperature self-checks, modified seating for cafeteria and office areas, staggered lunch schedules and expanded cleaning practices, officials said.

Face masks are also required for anyone who cannot maintain the required 6-foot social distance.
