The downtown Anderson Confederate monument was vandalized late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, according to Anderson City Officials.
Orange paint was splattered on three sides of the base of the monument, which sits in the courtyard outside of the Anderson County Courthouse on Main Street.
"We’ll treat this vandalism like we treat all vandalism of our assets here in our cities," said Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts. "It’s totally against our fabric, our way of life, our community and what we believe in, and we hope to get to the bottom of it."
A professional cleaning crew pressure washed the paint off of the monument early this morning.
Anderson Police say they are currently looking for a suspect but do not have any leads as of Wednesday afternoon. Police say they are reviewing security camera footage of the courthouse courtyard.
