Spartanburg face mask ordinance goes into effect today

An ordinance to require face masks in some businesses in Spartanburg goes into effect today at noon.

Spartanburg City Council approved a face mask ordinance on Friday.

Spartanburg City Manager Chris Story said they've met with public health professionals and hospital leadership about the ordinance.

Masks will be required for all people entering grocery stores or pharmacies in city limits, and businesses must post signs informing patrons of the requirement.

The ordinance says all restaurants, retail stores, salons, grocery stores, and pharmacies in the city must require their employees to wear a face covering at all times, if they have face-to-face interaction with the public.

People who fail to comply could be fined up to $25, according to city leaders.
