Pilot dead after F-16 crash overnight at South Carolina Air Force Base

A military pilot has died after an F-16CM crash at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter County.

The pilot was on a routine training mission around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when the crash happened, according to a spokesman for the base.

The F-16CM Fighting Falcon was assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing.

The pilot was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, according to a report from WIS.

The name of the pilot has not been released.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
