SC Gov. Henry McMaster recommends schools reopen after Labor Day

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is recommending schools in South Carolina do not reopen until after Labor Day but is adamant that districts need to give parents the option to send their children back to the classroom five days a week.

“We must do it safely, must do it carefully, but we must do it,” McMaster said during a Wednesday news conference.

McMaster said he would not issue an executive order on reopening schools and would leave it up to the districts to decide.

He said he has instructed Education Superintendent Molly Spearman to not approve any district plan that doesn’t include the option of in-person learning five days a week.

"Today I’m calling on all the public school districts to submit reopening plans to give parents the option for 5 days a week or parents can choose to keep their children home for virtual instruction," McMaster said.
