Off-duty Spartanburg officer attacked while working security hospitalized

An off-duty Spartanburg police officer was attacked Thursday while working security at Walmart, according to the Spartanburg Police Department.

James Ray Cunningham, 22, of Woodruff, was arrested and charges are pending, according to Maj. Art Littlejohn.

Littlejohn said officers responded about 1:30 p.m. to the Walmart Dorman Centre store at 141 Dorman Centre Dr. about a fight inside the store.

A witness told responding officers a man started attacking the off-duty officer for no apparent reason, according to Littlejohn.

Cunningham was brandishing a knife during the attack, and the officer was knocked to the ground and punched several times, Littlejohn said.
