Historic rivalry football game canceled after positive COVID-19 test

The historic Elbert County High School vs. Hart County High School Football game, also referred to some fans as the "Superbowl of North Georgia" has been canceled this year following an Elbert County High School football player testing positive for COVID-19.

The game was scheduled to be played Friday night in Elberton at the Elbert County High School Stadium, the Granite Bowl. According to Elbert County High School Athletic Director Brian Turner, the game usually draws around 15,000 fans from across both counties and is the most anticipated game of the year.

"Unfortunately, within our football program we had a positive case that affected several of our players and coaching staff, and it's just unfortunate, especially this late in the game," said Turner. "We had already started pre-selling tickets this week. We're offering fans the opportunity to get a refund or use those tickets for another game, but it's just really unfortunate."

Friday's game's capacity was reduced to 4,000 in line with CDC social distancing guidelines. Both schools had already sold a combined 2,000 tickets for Friday's game.
