50 Years Ago Today, Man Walked On The MOON!

Today is such a monumental day in the history of not just the United States, but the world! 50 years ago today, man walked on the moon!

At Rice Stadium in Houston, TX in September of 1962, President John F. Kennedy spoke these famous words that ignited the space race, "We choose to go to the Moon...We choose to go to the Moonin this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..." This ignited NASA to develop the technology and tools needed to put a man on the moon!

From the Gemini Program, to the Apollo program, NASA was paving way for space exploration in the world. At the same time however, Russia was making strides themselves. The race to the moon was on, and it all came down to that one week in July. As the United States got ready to launch Apollo 11, Russia was launching their own unmanned space craft headed to the moon. It was pivotal for everything to run smooth.

The launch of Apollo 11 was incredible! The sound was louder than anything heard before. It shook buildings and was visible for miles. Everyone on the space coast of Florida stopped what they were doing to watch the launch, along with most of the US. As Neil, Buzz, and Michael left Earth's orbit and headed to the moon, the entire nation was on pins and needs. On July 19th, Apollo 11 entered the moon's gravity, and Neil and Buzz headed into the lunar module. As they headed towards the moon's surface, Michael Collins was left in the command module orbiting the moon alone! As Neil and Buzz inched closer and closer to the surface of the moon, they were met with many obstacles. Multiple warning lights, computer failures, and even over shooting the landing zone, Neil ended up have to manually land the lunar module. As they got close, they quickly realized there was not a flat surface to land, and Neil was forced to find a spot suitable! With only 30 seconds of fuel left, and mission control holding their breathe, the Eagle touched down on the surface of the moon. "Houston, Tranquility Base here....the Eagle has landed". Those words from Neil Armstrong made the world erupt in applause! Check out the video as it happened on CBS news below!

6 and a half hours after landing on the moon, Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module and stepped foot on the surface of the moon, forever changing our world as we knew it. His iconic words still ring today as proof that ANYTHING is possible! The United States had won the space race. Above that, they united a world that was in turmoil. They proved that hard work and dedication makes anything possible. The fact that MILLIONS of people across the world got to witness Armstrong stepping on the moon is absolutely incredible.
