A high school football coach in Portland, Oregon is being hailed a hero after a surveillance video was released this weekend showing the moment he took a gun away from a suicidal student and then calmed him down with a hug.
The incident took place back on May 17th at Parkrose High School. Student Angel Granados-Diaz, then 18, walked into school with a loaded shotgun under his coat. Students immediately saw it and ran out of their classrooms. Meanwhile, football and track coach Keanon Lowe stayed calm and was able to coax the gun out of the student's hands. He then settled him down with a hug as he passed the gun on to a fellow faculty member.
The video was released this weekend after the court case was completed. Granados-Diaz, who suffers from mental illness and is suicidal, was sentenced to three years' probation and is receiving treatment for mental health issues. Lowe said of the encounter, "I just wanted to let him know that I was there for him. I told him I was there to save him — I was there for a reason and that this is a life worth living.” (TIME)
