Scuba Steve knew when he met his now wife that she was different than all the others so much so that he went above and beyond to impress her.
When they first met, Scuba Steve had just gone through a divorce and didn't have a lot of money to his name. He had a place to live and some money here and there for basic needs. But he didn't have enough money to spend on any kind of dates, elaborate or not. He admitted his credit score was in the high 300s at the time. However, he knew that she was really special and he wanted to pursue her.
So he did the only thing he could at the time, pull his money out of his 401K to spend on dates. He took $5,000 out and spent it on their first several dates. However, when it came time to visit her, Scuba Steve had to fess up that he didn't have enough money to come out to see her. He ended up telling her what he had done, and despite putting on a bit of a show to get her attention while dating, she stuck around and even helped him get his finances on track.
