Amy Saw Dolly Parton Driving at 4:30 a.m. And Nobody Believed Her
The Bobby Bones Show has spent the morning sharing favorite Dolly Parton memories, and one story led to a debate that's apparently still not completely settled.
Years ago, Amy came into the studio convinced she'd seen Dolly driving around Nashville before sunrise. Nobody believed her.
"It was so early in the morning," Amy recalled. She said she spotted Dolly near Music Row around 4:30 a.m. and immediately knew it was her.
The problem? Bobby and Eddie were certain there was no way.
"We didn't believe you," Bobby admitted.
In fact, Amy said everyone was so skeptical that she eventually started questioning herself.
"I started to believe I didn't see her because y'all didn't believe me."
But then Dolly herself came on the show.
During the interview, the crew brought up Amy's story, and Dolly confirmed it really was her.
"That was me," Dolly said.
As it turns out, seeing Dolly on the road that early wasn't unusual at all. Dolly explained that she's famously an early riser, often waking up around 3 a.m. to pray, journal, meditate, and work on creative ideas before most people are even out of bed.
"So if I'm seeing her at 4:30 in the morning, she's already been up an hour and a half," Amy pointed out.
Amy also said one reason she was so sure it was Dolly is because, well... Dolly looked exactly like Dolly.
"I don't think she leaves her house not ready to go," Amy said.
The iconic hair, the look, the presence. Everything about it screamed Dolly.
Of course, Bobby couldn't resist stirring things up years later.
Looking back, he joked that maybe Dolly was just being so nice that she didn't want to embarrass Amy on national radio.
"Dolly was such a giver," Bobby teased. "Maybe she just wanted to cover for you."
Amy wasn't having it.
"Oh, now you're taking my story away from me again?" she laughed.
The conversation eventually shifted into other favorite Dolly memories.
For Eddie, it wasn't a specific story. It was Dolly's energy.
He remembered hearing her before he even saw her.
"She always had this loud jewelry," Eddie said. "Twenty bracelets on each arm."
Whenever Dolly walked into the studio, there was no quiet entrance.
"When she walked in, it wasn't like, 'Hi, guys,'" Eddie remembered. "It was, 'I'm here!'"
Bobby compared it to Kramer from Seinfeld bursting through the door, except with a lot more sparkle.
Even off the air, Dolly brought the same larger-than-life personality.
For Bobby, one of his favorite memories came when he took a shot and asked Dolly if she'd narrate parts of his comedy special.
"It was a Hail Mary ask," Bobby said. "I thought there's no way."
Dolly's response?
"Yeah, sure."
She ended up recording the intro, middle segments, and ending for the project, something Bobby says he'll always treasure.
The crew also laughed about one of Dolly's most famous stories: the time she entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest... and lost.
Yes, really.
Over the years, Dolly has shared the story herself, proving that her sense of humor was just as legendary as her music.
By the end of the conversation, the stories were different, but they all pointed to the same thing. Whether it was a random early-morning sighting, the sound of her bracelets coming down the hallway, or her willingness to say "yes" when she absolutely didn't have to, Dolly had a way of leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.
And as far as Amy is concerned, she finally has the proof she needs.
She saw Dolly.
Dolly confirmed it.
Case closed.
Looking back now, it's one of those memories that hits a little differently. At the time, it was just Amy trying to convince everyone she saw Dolly driving around Nashville before sunrise. Now it's one more reminder of how Dolly had a way of showing up in people's lives and leaving them with a story they'll never forget. The crew may not get another chance to hear her bracelets jingling down the hallway, but it's hard not to feel like Dolly will keep showing up anyway, in a song on the radio, a favorite memory, or some unexpected moment that makes people smile. ❤️
